Closing the Case

The breakthrough would occur in 2008. Due to advances in DNA technology, it was now possible for the investigating units to assemble a profile of the killer using samples and data they had gathered during the initial investigation. Using this profile, there was an appeal for people in the area to come forward with names of potential suspects. With this information, a swab could be taken of the suspect’s mouth and the DNA matched against the profile of the killer. A similar case involving a man known as the M25 rapist (named after a local highway) had been successful using this approach. Over one hundred calls came from the public. The police used this information to assemble a list of the most likely suspects, and they began to take samples.
